Deposed Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle was assassinated in the streets of Asunción, Paraguay on September 17, 1980 when his car was hit by an RPG-7 rocket launcher. The assassination, which took place over a year after the FSLN had ousted Somoza and taken control of the Nicaraguan government, was led by the Argentinian Enrique Gorriarán Merlo, a former member of the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (ERP).
